A Naturopathic Approach to Seasonal Allergies

After a crazy winter, most of us are all welcoming the nice weather of spring. But many allergy sufferers may not be so excited. As the trees and flowers bloom, their pollen becomes a major source of allergies, which can present symptoms like itchy eyes and throat, runny and clogged nose, and, in some cases, an annoying cough due to post-nasal drip.

What Are Allergies?

In simple terms, an allergy is an over-reactive response of the immune system to certain substances that are foreign to our bodies, called allergens. We acquire our allergies throughout our life, and some people are more susceptible than others. One must have at least one contact with a substance to become allergic to it.

Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost in excess of $18 billion.1

Conventional allergy treatment attempts to block the immune response, or in more severe cases, to suppress the entire immune function with steroids. While this approach can provide symptomatic relief, it does nothing to address the underlying cause of the problem. Patients often become dependent on their medication, suffer from numerous side effects, and even worsen their overall health by constantly suppressing their immune system.

Treating Seasonal Allergies

A holistic approach to allergy relief is based on identifying and eliminating the underlying cause of the disease rather than masking its symptoms. 1.1 Quote

Food First

I’ve found that most people who suffer from seasonal allergies also have some underlying food allergies. Normally they don’t notice many symptoms from the food allergies, but coupled with allergens from the environment, the body becomes overloaded and symptoms occur.

The first obvious step is to change the person’s diet and remove the most allergenic foods through an elimination diet. In some cases, I will run specific blood tests for food allergies as well as environmental allergies such as pollen, grass, dust and mold, among others. Many times I’ll see dramatic results when patients have food allergies, and I do things to repair the integrity of the intestinal barrier through the use of different herbs and nutrients.

Supplements to Treat Allergies

To help strengthen the respiratory barriers in the nose and lungs, I may recommend a variety of different nutrients and herbs. The first supplements I use are Vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Both act to improve the integrity of the respiratory mucous membrane barriers.

Vitamin C has the added benefit of helping the body break down the histamine molecule, which is released by the body in response to allergens.2 A specific bioflavonoid called Quercetin can be effective in treating allergies by acting as a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory.3 I also recommend an herb called freeze-dried stinging nettles leaf extract, which can lead to significant symptom relief.4

When I can uncover exactly what a patient is allergic to, I will often use desensitizing homeopathic drops made from the actual allergen in a diluted form.

So, if you’re dreading this spring due to seasonal allergies, visit a naturopathic physician who can work with you to identify contributing food allergies, correct your digestion and recommend some natural non-toxic treatments for allergy symptom control.

Aller-Relief

Aller-Relief – this product contains the very important anti-allergy ingredients: quercetin and stinging nettle leaf extract combined with enzymes and NAC. Most patients will take 2 capsules up to 3 times a day throughout allergy season.

Aller-Zyme

Aller-Zyme– contains the histamine degrading enzyme amylase. Patients typically combine this product with the Aller-Relief for more acute allergy symptoms. It is best taken on an empty stomach at a dose of 2-3 pills at the first sign of allergic symptoms (runny nose, itchy eyes, eczema or congestion) and dosed again as needed throughout the day if symptoms return. It will often halt these issues very quickly.

Ultra Flora Complete

Ultra Flora Complete – maintaining optimal levels of beneficial digestive tract flora is extremely important for good immune system health. Ultra Flora complete is a high potency probiotic supplement that contains multiple strains of beneficial bacteria as well as an immune enhancing pre-biotic fiber. Having a healthy balance of flora is essential to maintaining gut membrane integrity which can result in less food allergies and sensitivities. 1-2 capsules before bed is a standard dose.

Real C

Real C – vitamin C has been shown to aid in the body’s ability to degrade histamine. Dr. Aieta’s Real C product contains a food based form of vitamin C along with a mixture of flavonoids to help strengthen the integrity of the mucus membranes, in particular those in the lungs and sinus cavity. Ideal dosing is 1-2 capsules 2-3 times a day with food.

5 Critical Blood Tests That EVERYONE Should Have Performed

5 Critical Blood Tests That EVERYONE Should Have Performed

These are some of the basic conventional lab tests that I recommend running on most patients. These tests really help me to evaluate their true state of health.

1. Blood testing for carbohydrate metabolism.

2. Blood testing for thyroid metabolism.

3. Blood testing for adrenal (stress) hormones.

4. Blood testing for a specific viral infection.

5. Blood testing for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies.

These can be easily run by your conventional doctor at any local lab such as Quest or LabCorp to just name a few. Regardless of your health concern or complaint I feel that the following crucial lab tests can really provide you with a starting point to regaining your health and ultimately optimizing it.

Important Cholesterol Facts

Did You Know That Cholesterol is a Necessary Part of Human Existence?

Some important facts: Cholesterol from the diet and cholesterol manufactured in the liver originates from many of the major hormones that fuel the human endocrine system.

Cholesterol is essential for the body’s production of pregnenolone, progesterone, cortisol, DHEA, testosterone, estrone, estradiol and estriol.

Most people when asked about cholesterol simply equate it to heart disease yet they don’t realize that cholesterol is actually vital for human life.

If the body is stressed and the adrenals are not working properly from undernutrition or physical exhaustion, the cholesterol levels will physiologically increase to attempt to manufacture more DHEA and cortisol (both adrenal hormones).

If the thyroid is under performing, then the cholesterol levels increase to compensate by making more of the other hormones.

If a woman has polycystic ovaries with an imbalance of testosterone over estrogen, the cholesterol increases.

If a man is low in testosterone or becomes diabetic, his cholesterol increases.

The main point is that high cholesterol is a sign that the body’s hormones are not in balance.

To treat the symptom (the high blood cholesterol), most physicians will resort to statin drugs to actually poison the liver’s ability to produce cholesterol….not only can this worsen hormone imbalances, but it can greatly increase the person’s risk of developing other more serious diseases.

Total cholesterol levels up to 300 were not considered important until there were pharmaceutical drugs available to lower the levels.

In my practice I will first and foremost treat the cause of the cholesterol as a problem of nutrition and a problem of hormone imbalance.

A Naturopathic Guide To Detoxification. A Revised Special 2022 Edition

Did you know that the top 10 detoxification questions people ask every month are:

1) How to detox your liver 10,100

2) How to detox your body 5,700

3) How long does it take to detox from alcohol? 4,900

4) How to detox your body from mold 4,100

5) How to detox 3,200

6) How long to detox from alcohol? 3,000

7) How to detox from weed 2,000

8) How to detox from alcohol 1,700

9) How to detox from sugar 1,600

10) How to detox from alcohol at home

…and that’s just people putting things into their bodies, intentionally for the most part, wanting to find and undo “button” or reverse the affects of too much fun.

But what about the toxins we don’t knowingly ingest or absorb?

❏ Do you drink unfiltered water, or beverages with artificial sweeteners?

❏ Do you cook with Teflon, plastic utensils, aluminum cookware, or reheat foods in the microwave using plastic containers?

❏ Does your home or workplace contain conventional cleaning chemicals or toxic substances, new construction materials, or show signs of mold or water damage?

❏ Do you consume processed foods (i.e., foods with added artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or sweeteners), deep-fried, or fast foods?

❏ Do you eat conventionally-grown (non-organic) or genetically- modified fruits and vegetables, eggs, animal proteins, and farmed fish?

❏ Do you smoke, exposed to second-hand smoke, or have a history of heavy use of alcohol, recreational, or prescription drugs?

❏ Do you have root canals, extracted teeth, “silver” fillings, crowns, dental sealants, dentures, retainers, aligning trays, braces, mouth guards, dental implants, etc.?

Toxins Are Everywhere

We simply cannot escape the 80,000 plus pollutants, household and personal care products, chemicals, plastics, mold, heavy metals, pesticides, contaminated water, and more in our everyday living environment.

Things that can increase toxicity in your body:

  • Alcohol (obviously the #1 answer according to what people are asking every month)
  • Smoking
  • Prescription and OTC drugs
  • Infections/illness
  • Stress
  • Processed food
  • Non-organic food/glyphosate
  • Environmental toxins, chemicals, and heavy metals
  • Nutrient deficiencies and a poor diet
  • Allergies/food intolerances
  • Genetic variances negatively affecting liver detoxification pathways

Toxins Accumulate In Your Body

We also have toxic buildup inside our bodies from things like normal metabolic processes, hidden infections and inflammation.

Detoxing Obviously Makes Sense

Now you know a little bit about how your body gets toxins, intentional or inadvertently. And like many of the people asking the same questions every month, the next step seems to be obvious, detox to undo the damage.

But there are a lot of detoxes out there. Where do you start?

A Detox Can Mean Many Things

  1. Temporarily abstaining from something harmful (like sugar or alcohol)
  2. Consuming something beneficial (like green juice)
  3. A combination of things that ultimately help our bodies eliminate substances detrimental to our health

Regardless of the approach, the objective of
a detox is to remove the bad stuff.

This is A Naturopathic Physician’s (Dr. Aieta, ND) Approach to Natural Detoxification

To do this we need to support our body’s natural detoxification organs so they function optimally. The liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin and lungs process and excrete toxins through our urine, feces, sweat, and breath on a daily basis.

What do we actually need to do (and stop doing) to detox in a healthy, effective, and manageable way?

Following an easy yet effective custom-formulated detox can get you started on the right path towards rebalancing your health and getting rid of ongoing symptoms.

Over 20 years experience as an expert in herbal medicine

As a CT-licensed naturopathic physician, nutritionist, and expert in herbal medicine for over twenty years, I have seen what works in clinical practice.

My detox is designed to be a fool-proof method using a simple dietary, lifestyle and supplement plan to target the ways the body eliminates waste.

This strategy gets quick results while teaching basic ways to relieve some of the most common health complaints for good (like weight gain).

Dr. Aieta’s Detox Program Overview

Let’s first discuss dietary changes that we can all gradually do to get back on track. Instead of jumping head first into a very strict diet plan that may be difficult to stick with, we can do it gradually in steps while taking some very specific natural supplements as an adjunct to the diet to help with overall metabolism and detoxification.

We can break it down to weekly dietary changes and supplements that build upon the previous week as we work towards achieving or re-achieving optimal health with a gradual cleansing.

Detox Protocol Week 1:

For the first week as you are trying to get back on track simply alter your diet by avoiding all grain products – by just doing this you will significantly reduce your daily sugar and carb intake. This means taking out bread, pasta, cereal, crackers, rice, corn, cookies, and cakes etc. Don’t worry about tracking your carbs or calories just focus on being 100% grain free and try to just eat when your are hungry and limit between meal snacking. When you are ready move on to step 2

Detox Protocol Week 2:

Continue to avoid the grain products as well as foods with added sugar. Now it’s time to start being more aware of how much fat you are ingesting daily in contrast to your protein. Most people forget this crucial step of adding more fat in. It’s easy to cut carbs and immediately start eating tons of protein and forget about the need for dietary fat. In order to get into ketosis, it’s important to eat higher fat (70% or more of your daily calories) moderate protein (around 20-25%) and low carb (around 7% or less).

Detox Protocol Week 3:

Start checking for the presence of ketones either through urine (convenient, cheap but least accurate), breath (more expensive, very convenient, more accurate than urine), or blood (most expensive due to the cost of the test strips, most accurate, least convenient). Based upon your ketone status you can adjust your diet accordingly…..maybe less carbs, less protein and more fat.

Detox Protocol Week 4:

Once you are in ketosis your appetite should be greatly diminished so you should start trying some intermittent fasting. Essentially only eat when you are hungry and try eating within a 6-8 hour window.

Detox Protocol Week 5 and on-going:

if you hit a plateau – pick one day a week as a designated overfeed day where you may exercise more and increase your fat and protein intake but keep your carbs low (less than 20-30 Net Carbs). This will recharge your metabolism.

Featured Products

Now for the supplements! I’m going to highlight 4 supplements this month that will aid in boosting the metabolism and start detoxifying the body by supporting the organs of elimination (the liver, kidneys and digestive tract).

Our first product is called: Thyro-Adrenal Support Complex– the typical dosage that I recommend to patients is 2 capsules every morning, with or without food. This product can be started right away during week 1 and taken on-going.

The first product is designed to support the adrenal glands, which are two little glands that sit on top of our kidneys that produce hormones that help with energy, focus, blood sugar regulation, metabolism, inflammation control, and one’s ability to properly deal with stress.

This same product also supports the thyroid gland.

The thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland located in the neck area that produces powerful hormones that regulate how fast our cells burn up the calories that we take in from our diets. It essentially dictates our metabolism.

As we age our metabolism can slow down and if our diets are not dense in specific nutrients that fuel the thyroid it becomes very easy to put on excess body weight and more difficult to take it off.

Now let’s look at some products to aid detoxification. The next three products comprise Dr. Aieta’s Two Week Detox Protocol:  Most detox or cleanse kits contains harsh laxatives and other suspect products.

My detox protocol uses a gentle laxative, a tasteless fiber supplement to bind up toxins from the GI tract and provide satiety so one eats a little less and a well rounded liver detox product that also supports the gallbladder, kidneys and lymphatic system.

Directions:
Tri-Mag (Laxative Formula): Day 1 through 7: Three tablets at bedtime with 8 ounces of water.
Day 8 through 14: Two tablets at bedtime with 8 ounces of water. Reduce dosage if you experience abdominal discomfort or diarrhea (you may only require 1-2 tablets opposed to 2 or 3). If discomfort persists, discontinue use.

Fiber Detox: For 14 days, Mix 1 scoop into water in the morning and again at night. After drinking mixture – follow up with another glass of 8oz of water.

Liver Detox Support: Day 1 through day 7: One capsule at night.
Day 8 through day 14: One capsule in the morning and two at night.

Dr. Aieta’s Two Week Detox Protocol will contain enough products for 2-3 more two week detoxes. Dr. Aieta recommends doing his two week detox every 3 months or at every change of season for optimal health.
